EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: gray-white solid.
Danger! Strong oxidizer. Contact with other material may cause a fire. Causes respiratory tract irritation. Causes eye and skin irritation. Causes severe digestive tract irritation with pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May corrode the digestive tract with hemorrhaging and possible shock. May cause central nervous system effects. May cause cardiac disturbances.
Target Organs: Central nervous system, muscles, cardiovascular system.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: Causes eye irritation.
Skin: Causes skin irritation.
Ingestion: Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause respiratory failure. May cause circulatory system failure. May cause hemorrhaging of the digestive tract. Causes potassium deficiency and may affect the function of the heart and central nervous system. Symptoms may include salivation, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, violent purging, cardiac rhythm changes, dilated pupils, confusion, dizziness, muscle tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and death.
Inhalation: Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion.
Chronic: No information found.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion: Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Strong oxidizer. Contact with other material may cause fire.
Extinguishing Media: Use water spray to cool fire-exposed containers. Use water only!

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Remove all sources of ignition.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Wash hands before eating. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid contact with clothing and other combustible materials. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
Storage: Do not store near combustible materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits.
Exposure Limits
Chemical Name ACGIH NIOSH OSHA - Final PELs
Barium Peroxide 0.5 mg/m3 TWA (listed under Barium). none listed 0.5 mg/m3 TWA (listed under Barium).
